"You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" - Patty Loveless

You'll Never Leave Harlan
 Songwriters: SCOTT, DARRELL

In the deep dark hills of eastern Kentucky
That's the place where I trace my bloodline
And it's there I read on a hillside gravestone
You will never leave Harlan alive

Oh, my grandfather's dad crossed the

Cumberland Mountains
He took a pretty girl to be his bride
Said, won't you walk with me out of the mouth
Of this holler
Or we'll never leave Harlan alive

Where the sun comes up about ten in the morning

And the sun goes down about three in the day
And you fill your cup with whatever bitter brew you're drinking
And you spend your life just thinkin' of how to get away

No one ever knew there was coal in them mountains

'Til a man from the Northeast arrived
Waving hundred dollar bills he said I'll pay ya for your minerals
But he never left Harlan alive
Grandma sold out cheap and they moved out west
Of Pineville
To a farm where big Richland River winds
I bet they danced them a jig, laughed and sang a new song
Who said we'd never leave Harlan alive

Well the times they got hard and tobacco wasn't selling

And ole granddad knew what he'd do to survive
He went and dug for Harlan coal
And sent the money back to grandma
But he never left Harlan alive

Where the sun comes up about ten in the morning

And the sun goes down about three in the day
And you fill your cup with whatever bitter brew you're drinking
And you spend your life digging coal from the bottom of your grave

You will never leave Harlan alive

12-02-26 Kaka'ako Pow Wow Cooke Street Wall

Richard and I went to Kaka'ako today to have lunch at Hank's.  As we were parking, I noticed that a wall across the parking lot next to Hank's had street art on it...by the way hot dogs are the specialty at Hank's and they are excellent.  Great fries too, so check them out as they call them Haute Dogs.

Woke up early this morning to attend OPMUG's sunrise shoot at Waialae Beach Park in Kahala.  Thankfully the weather cooperated and we had a pretty nice sunrise.

12-02-24 EOH Ala Moana Beach Park Magic Island Hilton Hawaiian Village Fireworks Display

Last evening the EOH photography group meet at Magic Island with the intent of taking pictures of the setting sun then later the Hilton Hawaiian Village's fireworks display.  While the sunset never materialized there was some drama when a sailboat entering the Ala Wai Harbor ran aground.  This brought out a fire truck and an ambulance for the rescue effort.  Initially the firemen scampered along the waters edge looking for something, in the water, with their flashlights.  In the meantime a harbor patrol boat came along and began the task of off loading the two women (as I was told) off the stranded sailboat.
