12-08-05 IWSSB Ko Olina Light Play

When we first began planning this outing, Marshall posted a picture he took of himself spinning steel wool.  Well we just had to do this so...

He started us off by being the first "spinner".  Marshal began by shining a flashlight on himself so we could get a focus lock then he'd start spinning.  It's as spectacular to see as it is to photograph.

It even looks great in black & white.

Soon we tired of the vertical spin so Marshall did a horizontal spin.

This is near the end before the steel wool stopped throwing out sparks.

Booker brought some colored flashlights that were long like chemical light sticks...we spun those too.

Gaining a focus lock on Marshall.  That's the breakwater behind him and he's standing in a foot or two of water...about 5 feet off shore.

Getting a bit more creative.

Another horizontal spin.

This is the end of a burn.  The bright streak hitting the water is the steel wool being dunked to be sure it's out.  There's a really cool "whooshing" sound when you put the still burning steel wool into the water.

12-08-05 IWSSB Ko Olina Sunset Moonrise Milkyway

Did quite a bit this past Sunday.  Early evening I headed up to Ko Olina's Ihilani Resort & Spa for the Sunset, moonrise and my first attempt at photographing the Milkyway.

The little cove we were in was really crowded...a monk seal had come ashore and as a result there were throngs of tourists snapping pictures.

I was more interested in the flat shelf that the waves would wash up over then recede from.

King of his breakwater...

I intentionally shot this out of focus because the lights along the shoreline were interesting to me.

My first attempt at photographing the Milkyway and being reasonably in focus.

Two interesting things about this shot, first I think that's a meteorite (the streak lower left center) and second the 7 brightest stars on the right form an arc.

I'm getting better...

I do believe that Ko Olina is haunted.

12-08-05 OPMUG Aiko Sekiguchi's Karaoke School Performance

Don Touchi got us some tickets to attend and photograph the Aiko Sekiguchi Karaoke School Performance held at the Pearl City Cultural Center.  It was quite a show and well worth attending.

Although all the performers are amateurs they were very good and their costumes were beautiful.

12-08-02 Kakaako Waterfront Park Fire Twirlers Sunset

Last evening a group of us from IWSSB visited Kaka'ako Waterfront Park to see the setting sun, full moonrise, and the main reason...watch and photograph the fire twirlers at their weekly practice meeting aka Fire Jam.

First, we went to the last pavilion on the western side of the park. There we patiently waited for the sun to get low enough on the horizon to allow us to take pictures without having the area around the sun completely "blowing out"

As the sun set behind the Waianae Mountain range, I noticed Don had found himself some nice foreground so I rushed over and joined him.

Finally we got some color after the sun had completely disappeared behind the mountains.

Found a very pretty ghost.

Emily getting back into the hang of things.

Andrew and Bill combining their acrobatic with juggling fire.

It's been quite some time since I've been here and it seems this was the right evening to return.  Andrew told me that this was their first time back, in a long time, as well.

12-07-31 EOH Kapahulu Sunset

Last evening I joined the EOH group for a sunset, full moonrise photo shoot atop a building in Kapahulu.  I have to admit the perspective  was unusual and interesting.

Lined up ready and waiting.
